MEETING MINUTES
June 22, 2010
1. Call to Order—The Chair called the meeting to order at 2:32 p.m.
2. Pledge of Allegiance—Chair Ring Erickson led the flag salute.
3. Roll Call—Present: Commissioner District 1;Lynda Ring Erickson;Commissioner District 3,Ross
Gallagher. Absent: Commissioner District 2,Tim Sheldon.
4. Semi-annual report from the Oakland Bay Clean Water District Advisory Committee
4.1 Growing Area status update-Lawrence Sullivan,Washington State Department of Health,went
over the current classifications in Oakland Bay and gave a summary of the water quality at each
station.
Cmmr.Gallagher asked if there would ever be a time when year long harvesting would be allowed
in the upper end.
Mr. Sullivan thought it was a goal that could be attainable.
Cmmr.Ring Erickson asked if Station127 is a chronic concern.
Mr. Sullivan stated that the station did have problems but the big concern has always been in the
northern end.
4.2 Summary of Action Plan Strategy and overall budget-Stephanie Kenny,Mason County Public
Health,presented the highlights of the Action Plan and a summary of the spending budgets that go
towards Oakland Bay.
Cmmr.Ring Erickson asked what the recommended time frame for checking septic systems in the
area is.
Ms.Kenny replied that it depends on the type of system,but a typical gravity system is required to
be checked every 3-5 years. There are no different recommendations for the Oakland Bay area.
They are instead focusing on septic education in the area.
Cn=.Ring Erickson recommend that the spending report be released to the press.
4.3 Building effective outreach-Emily Piper-Sanford,WSU,went over the 2009 Oakland Bay
Progress Report.
4.4 Capitol Land Trust-Activities update—Eric Erler,Capitol Land Trust,gave an update of the
agency's current activities in Oakland Bay. The highlight has been the acquisition of the Twin
Rivers Ranch.
5. The Value of Oakland Bay
5.1 Shellfish industry—Jason Regan,Taylor Shellfish,discussed the importance of funding water
quality efforts in Oakland Bay and provided statistics of the shellfish growing areas in Oakland
Bay.
5.2 Citizens-Janis Snoey commented that she is also a School Board member. She appreciates the
activities the County has provided in the school district,which have served to educate the
community through the children.

5.3 Squaxin Island Tribe—John Konovsky noted that the Committee has made an immense amount of
progress in the last few years and went over the key areas that deserve the Committee's attention.
He agreed that stable funding needs to be obtained.
6. Questions/Comments
6.1 Duane Fagergren commented that the Puget Sound Partnership is hosting a tour of the Sound and
one of the stops will be in Oakland Bay. It will be a great opportunity to highlight the partnerships
and good investment in Oakland Bay.
6.2 Bob Simmons thanked Commissioner Ring Erickson for all of her leadership on the Committee.
7. Adjournment—The meeting adjourned at 3:41 p.m.
