5. Residential Drug Disposal
5.1 Product Stewardship Proposal — Terri Thomas, Thurston County Solid Waste, discussed product
stewardship. The main issue is that two systems are working independently. The manufactures
are designing and producing products and local government is responsible for maintaining the
funding for the disposal of the waste created by the products. If the manufacture were responsible
for the end of life disposal of their products the costs could be passed onto the consumer and the
consumer may be more likely to purchase reusable products. The Northwest Product Stewardship
Council is also working on a bill for a drug take back program and she is trying to obtain support
for this upcoming legislation.
5.2 Vicki Kirpatrick, Mason County Public Health Director, provided an update on Mason County's
drug take back program. A ribbon cutting for the disposal boxes is planned to take place soon.
6. Chronic Disease Prevention— Lydia Buchheit, Mason County Public Health, and Chris Hawkins, Thurston
County Public Health and Social Services. Ms. Buchheit and Mr. Hawkins provided a handout regarding
preventing chronic disease. Mason County and Thurston County's chronic disease profiles were also
provided. Ms. Buchheit and Mr. Hawkins each discussed their County's efforts towards chronic disease
prevention.
7. Office of the Director
7.1 Health Officer Report — Dr. Yu reported that she just attended a State Medical Association
meeting where public health funding was discussed as a number one priority for the next
legislative session. She also reported that a couple of cases of E-coli are being investigated in
Thurston County Additional cases of whooping cough have been reported in Thurston County as

working with the Parks department and Public Works to explore possibilities for walking and
biking in the county.
Sherri McDonald, Thurston County Public Health and Social Services Director, announced that
Thurston County was awarded a one-year, $100,000 Federal grant to prevent chronic disease in
women and girls in Thurston County. They will also have the opportunity to apply for dollars to
implement the plan that will be the result of the first grant. It could be up to $400,000 per year
