Attendance: Mason County Board Members* Lynda Ring -Erickson; Ross Gallagher; Tim Sheldon
Ex-Officio Board Members: Scott Hilburn, Hospital District #1; Peggy VanBuskirk, Hospital
District #2; Frank Philips, Fire Commissioner.
1. Commissioner Ring Erickson called the meeting to order at 3:34 p.m.
2. Cmmr. Gallagher/Sheldon moved and seconded to adopt the agenda as published. Motion carried
unanimously. RE -aye; S-aye; G-aye.
3. Cmmr. Sheldon/Gallagher moved and seconded to approve the May 4, 2010 Joint Board of Health
meeting minutes and the June 22, 2010 regular Board of Health meeting minutes as presented.

4. Secretary of Health Mary Selecky — Cmmr. Ring Erickson welcomed Secretary Selecky.
Each of the Board members and Ex-Officio members were given the opportunity to discuss their individual
concerns about local public health with Secretary Selecky.
Secretary Selecky appreciated the idea of having ex-officio members on the Board of Health and noted that
having other elected officials in the community participate was a valuable contribution. She also discussed
her observations on local public health in rural counties.
5. Health Report Card and Health Rankings - Community Presentation. Heidi Iyall provided a Power Point
presentation regarding the County Health Report Card and Health Rankings. This presentation will also be
used to provide education in the community.
6. Administration
6.1 Director's Report — Vicki Kirkpatrick provided a handout showing Mason County's behavioral
risks in 2006 compared to the State of Washington. She also explained that the Health department
is developing a countywide water quality program that will rotate between the watersheds. The
focus of the program will be on ambient monitoring and pollution identification and correction.
6.2 Health Officer's Report — Dr. Yu reported that she is working on an air quality report for Mason
County. It should be ready next week. She also reported that there have been several calls about
bats in the area. Bat contact should be reported because of possible rabies exposure.
7. Environmental Health
7.1 Water Quality Update — Debbie Riley reminded the Board that there are seasonal closures at
Union Marina, Alderbrook Resort and Twanoh State Park.
7.2 West Nile Virus Update — Ms. Riley reported that West Nile Virus brochures have been provided
to employees and posters have been hung in the County departments.
7.3 Environmental Health Waivers - Ms. Riley presented the Board with the current Environmental
Health Waivers.
8. Community and Family Health - Tabled to August meeting.
9. Public Comment
9.1 Constance Ibsen asked if the emergency closure sign at Twanoh Beach has been taken down.
Ms. Riley responded that the sign should be down. The park rangers there take care of the signs.
