Vicki Kirkpatrick, Lydia Buchheit, and Debbie Riley Thurston County: Commissioner Karen Valenzuela, Commissioner Sandra Romero, Commissioner Cathy Wolfe; County Administrator Don Krupp; Assistant to Commissioner Cathy Wolfe Vickie Larkin; and Thurston County Public Health and Social Services Director Sherri McDonald Mason/Thurston Health: Health Officer: Dr. Diana Yu The meeting was called to order at 11:00 a.m. It was moved and seconded to approve the May 24, 2011 minutes. The motion passed. Information/Discussion The Hope Garden is now complete and has 16 plots. There are some extra plots that will be used for the schools. Besides the food grown in the garden, the Hope Garden also provided meaningful work/learning for the students who were involved and a sense of "community" for all of the people involved. Commissioner Ring Ericson stated that she would like to have Board of Health meeting in Belfair once the sewer project is complete. A joint letter of interest has been submitted for the Community Transformation Grant Proposal. The proposal is a regional proposal that includes Mason, Thurston, Grays Harbor, Lewis and Pacific Counties. However, only Thurston, Grays Harbor and Lewis Counties will receive funding if the state grant application is successful. The Department of Health did not identify either Mason or Pacific Counties as meeting the criteria for selection to receive funding. However, the Department of Health appreciated the support and inclusion of both Mason and Pacific Counties in the letter of interest and has said they hope to find other funding to support Mason and Pacific Counties. Regardless of whether or not Mason and Pacific are funding, we will benefit from the work that Thurston, Grays Harbor and Lewis Counties will do. The grant application is due by July Mason/Thurston County Joint Board of Health PAGE 2 Meeting June 30, 2011 15, 2011 and we hope to hear by the end of August whether or not the State was selected to receive the grant. Commissioner Ring Erickson talked about the Tobacco Quit line and was wondering if Mason County can buy that program from the State since it is no longer uses. It is a great program. Dr. Yu updated the joint Boards of Health about communicable disease - specifically Q fever. Q fever is caused by a specific type of bacteria carried by animals, most commonly sheep, goats and cattle. When humans inhale barnyard dust particles contaminated by infected animals, they may become infected. Dr. Yu also reported that the Group A strep numbers are up in both counties Finally, Dr. Yu reported that there has been a recent outbreak of herpes in horses however it is under control and it is not transmissible to humans. Lydia Buchheit reported that The ACHIEVE grant is a three year grant that focuses on policy that will lead to better health outcomes. Lydia also reported that the Mason County Health Department's HIV/AIDs program audit passed with 100% compliance. The Nurse Family Partnership (NFP) grant has been received and enrollment has doubled. The Health Department will be going to electronic charting soon. The joint Board of Health members discussed among themselves various public health topics including partnership and collaboration and the changing landscape in the health care and public health areas.
