October 23, 2012
Attendance: Mason County Board Members: Lynda Ring -Erickson; Tim Sheldon; Steve Bloomfield
Ex-Officio Board Members: Scott Hilburn, Hospital District #1; Peggy VanBuskirk, Hospital
District #2; Frank Philips, Fire Commissioner; Mike Olsen, City of Shelton Commissioner.
1. Commissioner Bloomfield called the meeting to order at 3:36 p.m.
2. Cmmr. Sheldon/Ring Erickson moved and seconded to adopt the agenda as published. Motion
carried unanimously. RE -aye; S-aye; B-aye.
3. Cmmr. Ring Erickson/Sheldon moved and seconded to adopt the regular meeting minutes of August
28, 2012 as presented. Motion carried unanimously. RE -aye; S-aye; B-aye
4. Zoonotic Disease Program - Protecting People from Animal Transmitted Disease -
Debbie Riley, Environmental Health, explained that she chairs the Zoonotics Disease Workgroup. She
provided an overview of the State's Zoonotics Disease program and gave statistics regarding recent
zoonotic disease infections in the state.
5. Office of the Director
5.1 Health Officer Report - The Health Officer was absent.
5.2 Director Report - Vicki Kirkpatrick provided an update regarding the Mental Health Advisory
Committee. They have been exploring therapeutic courts. They have found that the costs of
therapeutic courts are much less than housing someone in the correction system. She also noted
that a veteran's sub committee has been established. They have had some resignations and they
are looking into filling positions.
Ms. Kirkpatrick also stated that she would discuss the Public Health Systems Agenda for Change
at an upcoming meeting. They need to look into the alignment with Mason County priorities and
the Community Health Assessment.
She discussed the recent fire at Johns Prairie The Health Department quickly pulled together
community information regarding protecting yourself from poor air quality. Air quality was hard
to pin down because the monitoring station level changed depending on the wind.
6. Community and Family Health - The Community and Family Health Manager was absent.
7. Environmental Health
7.1 Ms. Riley announced that the Alderbrook and Hood Canal marinas were due to open up at the end
of October and beginning of December. Oakland Bay was reopened for harvest on the 21 st. It
had been closed due to rain. They are still trying to get 12 streams off of the D list and a new
sampling schedule was set up for Oakland Bay. She also announced that a celebration for the
upgrade at Oakland Bay would take place on October 29th.
7.2 Ms. Riley presented the Board with the current environmental health waivers.
Cmmr. Bloomfield asked about Mr. Davis' waivers. He thought three waivers on one property
seemed extreme.
Ms. Riley explained that it was a very narrow lot. It is a table four repair.

8. Public Comment - There was no public comment so each of the Board members provided and agency
update.
9. Adjourn - The meeting adjourned at 4:41 p.m.
