May 22, 2012
Attendance: Mason County Board Members: Lynda Ring -Erickson, Steve Bloomfield, Tim Sheldon.
Ex-Officio Board Members: Scott Hilburn, Hospital District #1; Peggy VanBuskirk, Hospital
District #2; Frank Phillips, Fire Commissioner; Mike Olsen, City of Shelton Commissioner.
1. Cmmr. Bloomfield called the meeting to order at 3:34 p.m.
2. Cmmr. Ring Erickson/Sheldon moved and seconded to adopt the agenda as published. Motion
carried unanimously. RE -aye; S-aye; B-aye.
3. Cmmr. Ring Erickson/Sheldon moved and seconded to adopt the regular meeting minutes of April
24, 2012 as presented. Motion carried unanimously. RE -aye; S-aye; B-aye
4. Board of Health Focus - Vicki Kirkpatrick discussed land use and transportation planning for healthy
communities. She noted that the presentation wasn't reflective of Mason County's current status. Mason
County already had progressive policies in place for many of the areas. She read a handout regarding
strategies for healthy and safe community environments.
Cmmr. Ring Erickson left the meeting at 3:58 p.m.
The Board discussed different ways of developing healthy communities.
Ms. VanBuskirk shared pictures of good and bad walking areas in Mason County.
Mr. Hilburn asked how the Board of Health members could be more involved in projects.
Cmmr. Sheldon suggested involving the Parks and Trails Director.
Mr. Hilburn noted that he would be out of the state in June so he would like the continuation of the
discussion to take place at a different meeting.
Ms. Kirkpatrick noted that there would be a joint meeting in June.
Cmmr. Sheldon asked Ms. Kirkpatrick to invite the Parks and Trails Director and perhaps someone from
the City Parks department to join the discussion at the meeting in July.
5. Administration
5.1 Health Officer Report — Dr. Yu was absent. Ms. Kirkpatrick reported that the Secretary of Health
had declared an epidemic of pertusis. The state has had the highest number of pertusis cases in
sixty years. The Health department had received 250 doses of the vaccine.
5.2 Director Report — Ms. Kirkpatrick reported that a federal grant had been received that would allow
the department to double the number of their nurse family partnership clients. The funding would
begin in October. She also reported that Washington was experiencing a late flu season, the
Medical Reserve Corp was working with the Squaxin tribal clinic to provide support for the
Paddle to Squaxin event and the department was establishing an award for Youth Leaders for a
Healthier Mason County. She also addressed a proposed state association of local Boards of
Health.

7. Environmental Health
7.1 Water Quality Update — Debbie Riley reported that the only closures in Mason County were ongoing
closures due to marinas.
7.2 Waivers — Ms. Riley provided the current environmental health waivers for the Board's information.
7.3 Ms. Riley discussed the need to hire two full time temporary employees to work on grants.
8. Community and Family Health
8.1 Manager's Report — The manager was absent.
9. Public Comment - There was no public present.
10. Adjourn - The meeting adjourned at 4:55 p.m.
