Attendance: Mason County Board Members: Lynda Ring -Erickson, Steve Bloomfield, Tim Sheldon.
Ex-Officio Board Members: Scott Hilburn, Hospital District #1; Peggy VanBuskirk, Hospital
District #2; Frank Phillips, Fire Commissioner; Mike Olsen, City of Shelton Commissioner.
1. Cmmr. Bloomfield called the meeting to order at 3:45 p.m.
2. Cmmr. Ring Erickson/Sheldon moved and seconded to adopt the agenda as published. Motion
carried unanimously. RE -aye; S-aye; B-aye.
3. Cmmr. Ring Erickson/Sheldon moved and seconded to adopt the regular meeting minutes of
February 28, 2012 as presented. Motion carried unanimously. RE -aye; S-aye; B-aye
4. Mason County Public Health and Human Services Strategic Plan — Vicki Kirkpatrick presented the
strategic plan and explained that the plan would be discussed and then brought forward for approval at a
future meeting. The department has specific strategic goals that relate to national public health goals. She
discussed each of the goals.
5. Immunization Report — Lydia Buchheit explained that about a year ago the Board agreed to focus on three
areas: oral health, obesity and immunizations. She provided handouts regarding each of the issues and
discussed the statistics for the community.
6. Administration
6.1 Health Officer Report — Ms. Kirkpatrick noted that the department would be reporting to the
Board of Health on how they are meeting the goals in the strategic plan each year.
6.2 Director Report — Dr. Yu reported that there has been one case of whopping cough reported in the
county so far this year. The disease hit an epidemic level in the state in 2011 and there have been
a number of infant deaths. The majority of cases have been in Eastern Washington and along the
I-5 corridor. She also reported that influenza is finally hitting Washington and it is currently at its
peak. She added that there have not been any further cases of TB reported, but four new cases of
HIV have been reported.
7. Environmental Health
7.1 Water Quality Update — Debbie Riley stated that sampling is continuing in Hood Canal to try to
remove streams from Ecology's D list. Anna's Bay growing area continues to be closed and Oakland
Bay has been reopened.
7.2 Waivers — Ms. Riley provided the current environmental health waivers for the Board's information.
8. Community and Family Health
8.1 Manager's Report — provided under item 5.
9. Public Comment - Constance Ibsen commented on the strategic plan. She wanted to further information
on each of the goals.
10. Adjourn - The meeting adjourned at 4:59 p.m.
