HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016/12/14 - Board of HealthMason County Board of Health Meeting Minutes December 14, 2016 MASON COUNTY BOARD OF HEALTH PROCEEDINGS Special Meeting 411 North 5th Street, Shelton, WA December 14, 2016 Attendance: Terri Jeffreys, County Commissioner; Peggy VanBuskirk, Hospital District #2; Vacant, Fire Commissioner; Kathy McDowell, City of Shelton Commissioner, Randy Neatherlin, County Commissioner, Dr. Yu, Mason County Health Officer. Absent: Tim Sheldon, County Commissioner and Eileen Branscome, Hospital District # 1 Chair Peggy VanBuskirk called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. Neatherlin/ Jeffreys moved and seconded to adopt the agenda as published. Motion carried unanimously. Jeffreys/McDowell moved and seconded to adopt the regular meeting minutes of September 27, 2016 as written. Motion carried. Resolution in Support of Public Health Funding Dave Windom discussed the main points of the resolution which asks for $25 million per year for the next two years until more foundational health issues are covered by the state. He explained that tobacco generates $700 million per year, none of which is allotted to public health. Cmmr. Neatherlin questioned if a resolution was the best course of action. Peggy noted that this resolution is in support of state funding. Dave added that every state jurisdiction is trying to pass resolutions to get to the legislature. Jeffreys/Neatherlin moved and seconded to adopt resolution 16-01. Motion carried. Resolution No. 16-01(Exhibit A) Resolution for 2017 Meeting Calendar A discussion was held regarding time of the meetings. Dr. Yu noted that Tuesdays are difficult due to scheduling conflicts. Peggy suggested moving the meetings to 3:00 instead of 3 :3 0 p.m. Neatherlin/McDowell moved and seconded to adopt the 2017 meeting calendar with change to reflect a 3:00 start time. Motion carried. Resolution No. 16-02(Exhibit B ) Foundational Public Health Dave presented a slideshow presentation and video titled "Public Health is essential" which covered funding impacts in Washington State, outbreaks and prevention, and core public health services. The 2017-2019 Legislative Budget Request is $50M to local health jurisdictions; $6M for Department of Health and $4M for modernization. If appropriated, Mason County could receive up to $209K. Discussion was had about the need for core public health services across the state.
