Proclamation
National Correctional Officers and Employees Week
May 1-7, 2022
WHEREAS, in 1984, then-President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5187 calling upon the
Country to pay tribute to the men and women who work in jails,prisons,and community corrections; and,
WHEREAS,in 1996,the U.S. Senate officially changed the name of the Proclamation to National
Correctional Officers and Employees Week,to be recognized in the first week of May; and,
WHEREAS,the Mason County Sheriff's Office is committed to maintain custody, security, and
control of the County's jail in a safe,efficient,and constitutional manner; and,
WHEREAS,Correctional Employees are often unseen and unappreciated,dedicated professionals
who chose a career as community servants who manage a diverse group of individuals, some whom are
violent,mentally ill,and dangerous;and,
WHEREAS, Correctional Employees are an indispensable part of law enforcement. They keep
our communities safe and put themselves in harm's way to advance a mission of protecting the public,staff,
and inmates, while at the same time promoting positive attitude, behavior, and skills to aid in successful
reentry into the community; and,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED,that the Board of Mason County Commissioners declares
the week of May 1 through 7, 2022 to be National Correctional Officers and Employees Week in Mason
County to honor the devoted Correctional Employees who, by their faithful and loyal dedication to their
responsibilities, have rendered dependable service to the community, remembering those correctional
professionals who have made the ultimate sacrifice,as well as those who continue to face the daily dangers
and challenges of our Nation's jails,prisons, and community corrections.
