HomeMy WebLinkAbout02-26-2013 BOHMASON COUNTY BOARD OF HEALTH PROCEEDINGS February 26, 2013 Attendance: Mason County Board Members: Randy Neatherlin, Terri Jeffreys Tim Sheldon was absent. Ex-Officio Board Members: Scott Hilburn, Hospital District #1; Peggy VanBuskirk, Hospital District #2; Frank Phillips, Fire Commissioner; Mike Olsen, City of Shelton Commissioner. 1. The Chairperson called the meeting to order at 3:31 p.m. 2. Cmmr. Neatherlin/Jeffreys moved and seconded to adopt the agenda as published. Motion carried. N-aye; S-absent; J-aye. 3. Correspondence - None 4. Cmmr. Neatherlin/Jeffreys moved and seconded to adopt the regular meeting minutes of January 22, 2013 as presented. Motion carried. N-aye; S-absent; J-aye 5. Board of Health Discussion  Hispanic Health and Housing – Board discussion/information sharing. The Board discussed health outreach efforts to the Hispanic community.  Role of the Board of Health - Vicki Kirkpatrick discussed the statute establishing the role of the Board of Health and the duties of the Board of Health, including communicable disease control. Cmmr. Neatherlin thought the Ex Officio members should be voting members for regular agenda items and an executive board could be established for fiscal and policy decisions. Mr. Hilburn discussed the importance of changing the health in the community. He felt the Board needed to be more actively involved. The Board discussed the benefits of changing the voting structure of the Board. It was determined that voting privileges should be expanded. The issue will be addressed again at the next meeting.  Next Steps/Future Topics - Cmmr. Jeffreys noted that the Community Health Improvement Plan would roll out in March. 6. Office of the Director 6.1 Health Officer Report - Dr. Yu reported that the flu was still on the decline. She noted that the next flu vaccine would cover four strains instead of three. 6.2 Director Report - Ms. Kirkpatrick reported that she would be speaking regarding mental health and gun violence at an upcoming community forum. She also noted that the county would be in limbo for Community Action Council funding. Lewis County will be writing the grant for allocation between the two counties. She has been approached by the Chair of the Thurston County Board of Health about future joint meetings. The Board didn't feel that the joint meetings were beneficial in the past. 7. Community and Family Health 7.1 Ms. Buchheit discussed the Community Health Assessment and the Community Health Improvement Plan. They are still working on the Community Health Assessment report. The CHIP probably won't be ready in March. She went over the priorities in the CHIP. BOARD OF HEALTH PROCEEDINGS February 26, 2013 - PAGE 2 8. Environmental Health 8.1 Water Quality Update – Debbie Riley reported that there were no emergency or ongoing seasonal closures in the county. 8.2 She also reported that seventeen high school students would be coming for a career choice field trip to Environmental Health. 8.3 Waivers - Ms. Riley noted that the waiver information is provided on the agenda. 9.
