Meeting Minutes
August 15, 2019
The regular meeting was called to order at 5 : oo p . m . , in the Mason County Building 1, Commission
Chambers, at 411 N . 5th Street, Shelton , WA by Chairperson Davis .
Attendance : Matthew Davis, Chair, Susan Ickes, Vice - Chair; William Kendrick, Commissioner
Others : Chief Tami Beyer . Sheryl Hilt, Finance Manager, and Becky Rogers, Chief Examiner
Public Hearing to consider revisions to Civil Service Rule 8 . 17A Probationary Period . Presenter : Chief
Tami Beyer
At 5 : 00 p . m . the Chairperson asked Chief Beyer to present her comments . Chief Beyer stated they
are proposing to add language at the end of Civil Service Rule 8 . 17A as follows :
"Any probationary period may be extended at the discretion of the Sheriff in
cases where the individual has been absent for more than a week or when
additional time to review the individual is considered to be appropriate . "
No public was present to comment on the revisions . No further discussion was given .
Cmmr. Ickes/Kendrick moved and seconded to approve the revisions to Civil Service Rule 8 , 17A
Probationary Period as presented by Chief Beyer. Motion carried unanimously.
Business :
1 . Approval of Minutes : July 18 , 2019 regular meeting minutes .
Cmmr. Ickes/Kendrick moved and seconded to approve the meeting minutes dated July 18, 2019 as
circulated. Motion carried unanimously.
2 . Chief Examiner Update
2 . 1 . Position Tracking — 3 vacant and funded FTE positions — The Chief Examiner noted there are
three vacancies : 1 Deputy Sheriff; 1 Corrections Deputy and 1 Records Specialist .
Sheryl Hilt, Finance Manager, interjected that the Corrections Deputy FTE count may be
filled .
3 . Sheriff' s Office Update
3 . 1 . Clerk — Chief Beyer announced they have one new clerk starting tomorrow, August 16 .
3 . 2 . Records Specialist — Interviews have been conducted for the Records Specialist position .
They are in the process of determining who will proceed on to backgrounding .

3 . 3 . 2020 Preliminary Budget — Ms . Hilt stated the MCSO 2020 preliminary budget includes a
request for additional personnel in 2020 - - Fourteen positions that were filled in 2016 and
not in 2019 and two corrections deputy positions for transportation of inmates from the jail
to the new court facility.
3 . 4 . Applicants - - There was discussion as to the number of applicants interested in vacancies in
the Mason County Sheriff' s Office or if there is a struggle to get candidates . Chief Beyer
noted that it depends on the position . It has been more difficult to obtain applicants for
the corrections deputy and deputy sheriff positions . There is an adequate number of
applicants for the clerical positions; however, they do not necessarily make it through to
the eligibility list . The benefit package Mason County has to offer is comparable with
neighboring jurisdictions . In terms of geography, if an individual lives in Shelton they
would need to drive 20 minutes one way or commute an hour in a different direction for an
increase in pay .
