Meeting Minutes
March 21, 2019
The regular meeting was called to order at 5:o8 p.m., in the Mason County Building 1, Commission
Chambers, at 411 N. 5th Street, Shelton, WA by Vice-Chairperson Matthew Davis.
Attendance: Matthew Davis, Vice-Chair, Susan Ickes, Commissioner, Chair Brian Kelly(Absent)
Others: Chief Tami Beyer, Sheryl Hilt, MCSO Finance Manager, Chief Kevin Hanson and Becky Rogers
Business:
1. Approval of Minutes: January 3, 2019 and February 21, 2019 regular meeting minutes.
Cmmr. Ickes/Davis moved and seconded to approve the meeting minutes dated January 3,
2019 and February 21, 2019 as circulated. Motion carried unanimously.
2. Chief Examiner Update
2.1. Position Tracking — The Chief Examiner noted there are 8 vacant FTE positions.
2.2. Clerk Eligibility List — Following the written and oral test, the Clerk eligibility list was
forwarded to Chief Beyers.
2.3. Corrections Lieutenant Promotional Announcement—The Chief Examiner announced the
closing date on the announcement is March 27.
3. Sheriff's Office Update
3.1. Position Tracking — Deputy Sheriff -- Chief Beyer stated in talking with the Undersheriff
they concurred the number of vacant Deputy Sheriff positions is three. It was
recommended to simply list the number of vacant positions, for position tracking, as the
incidents listed are not necessarily reflective of these vacant positions.
3.2. Clerk— Sheryl Hilt, Finance Manager, inquired about the new Clerk position as of 1/1/2019.
It was noted that this position has not been filled yet. The funding for the new position is
in the Extra Help line.
3.3. Corrections Deputy— Mrs. Hilt noted that one Corrections Deputy position was filled,
effective 3/18/2019. Chief Hanson added there will be an additional Corrections Deputy
position filled in May. This will leave one open position for Entry Level Corrections
Deputy.
3.4. Clerk— Chief Beyer reported they have three interviews for the Clerk position.
3.5. Record Specialist — They have one individual in backgrounding for the Records Specialist
position. This is the last name on the eligibility list.
4. Consideration of Brett Cain's written request for restoration of name to Entry Level Corrections
Deputy Eligibility List, per CSR 7.5.

Vice-Chair Davis explained this date and time has been set to discuss the request for
restoration of name by Mr. Cain. He asked if there were any questions about the appeal. Mr.
Cain was not present. Board Member Ickes stated she has reviewed the documentation. Chief
Hanson's assessment is valid and she would uphold removing the name from the eligibility list.
Board Member Davis also reviewed the documentation. He concurred with Member Ickes and
noted there were inconsistencies with the application and Personal History Statement.
Board Member Ickes stated that it is the applicant's responsibility to keep the Civil Service
informed of any changes to their application.
Board Member Ickes/Davis moved and seconded to deny Mr. Cain's appeal to restore his
name to the Entry Level Eligibility List for Corrections Deputy. Motion carried
unanimously.
