American Legion Centennial
WHEREAS, in March of 1919, United States troops stationed in France gathered together
in Paris to establish the American Legion,which was then chartered by the Congress of the
United States of America,and;
Whereas, the Fred B. Wivell Memorial Post 31, was organized in that same year, and was
later chartered in 1923,in Mason County and;
Whereas,the American Legion,and the local Post,are committed to upholding the ideals of
freedom and democracy, while working to impact the lives of their fellow Americans in a
positive manner,and;
Whereas, the goals of the American Legion, are to welcome returning veterans, provide
friendship and support, foster love and respect for our Constitution and our national flag,
and to promote a sincere patriotism in our youth,and;
Whereas,the American Legion honors all those who have served honorably in our military
services,and was instrumental in the establishment of the G.I.Bill of Rights,and;
Whereas, Post 31 of the American Legion provides volunteers who assist other Mason
County veterans in obtaining the benefits they have earned through their military service;
Now, therefore we, the members of the Mason County Board of Commissioners, do hereby
recognize the Centennial Year of the American Legion and Fred B. Wivell Memorial Post
31,and express our appreciation for their many contributions to Mason County.
