The exposure of their drain- field system, by a licensed pumper, revealed the following: 1. There is a 25 gallon gray-water settling tank and approximately 25 to 30 feet of drainfield on the east side of the building. This services the bath- room shower and wash basin. 2. On the west side of the building there is a second graywater system with a 25 gallon tank and 26 feet of drainfield. This system services the kitchen. 3. The septic system is located between the building and the highway. This is comprised of a two compartment, 500 gallon, homemade, concrete tank with baffles; there is 34 lineal feet of drainfield- for effluent disposal. The pumper found all drainfields and tanks to be in good condition. My impression is that there has been no abuse of the overall disposal system. Although, the septic tank and drainfield are small, the system is enhanced by the segregation of both bathroom and kitchen gray-water; this significantly reduces the hydraulic load to the septic system. As a consequence, assuming a Class 2 soil character- istic, the existing system would approximate a "two bedroom" usei ge. MASON COUNTY DEPARTMENT of GENERAL SERVICES Courthouse Annex 2 N. Unfortunately, the sketch showing drainfields merely adds confusion. In the absence of records on the size and configuration of the system, it will be required that: 1. Tank be exposed and pumped. 2. Size tank be determined. 3. Corners of drainfield exposed sufficiently to permit determination of drainfield sizing. 4. Statement by pumper as to adequacy of performance and condition of the tank and drainfield. All of the foregoing can be accomplished by a Mason County certified _ septic system pumper. Once this has been accomplished, the Environmental Health Divisio will inspect the property and respond to the permit request. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Box 186 Shelton, Washington 98584 (206) 426.5593 building environmental health maintenance parks&recreation planning sewer&water 3 March 21, 1985 i j Curtis McGuire I Kovalenko Architects 208 South Main Seattle, WA 98104 Dear Mr. McGuire: i On February 22nd, Ms. Wendy Bolender indicated that information would be required relative to the applicant's existing septic system. As yet, we have not received the necessary information that would permit evaluating the adequacy of said system. For approval by the Environmental Health Division, it must be demonstrated and/or determined that: 1. Existing system was sized for the minimum of a 2 bedroom structure. 2. Existing system is functioning properly. 3. No structures have been built on the existing drainfield; including driveway and/or parking (paved or unpaved) area. In the absence of records on the system, it will be necessary to expose the septic tank sufficiently to determine its volume and expose all corners of the drainfield to permit computation of size. In addition, the septic tanks must be pumped and evaluated by a certified pumper. The pumper would be able to give you information as to the tank size. A county sanitarian would have to inspect the exposed system before it is recovered. Finally, approval would be contingent on a written statement by the owner that the study would not be used as a bedroom. DENISON ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DIVISION MASON COUNTY DEPT. OF GENERAL USE P.O. BOX 186 SHELTON, WASHINGTON 98584 Dear Sir: I like to verify that remodeling my house on E 9071 Highway 106 Union, We is not increasing any bed room for living. The main purpose I am doing it is to put in a bath tub for my 1 wife. She does not feel comfortable there without a bath tub. In order to do that I might as well change the roof and make the ceiling a little taller, because as it is now, it is too low to feel comfortable there. There will be only one master bed room and a study room to do my office work there in the week ends. If possible, I like to have a little spare room for occasional over night /f1 On 1&5 guest, if we have any. There will be only my wife and I live there / partly during the year. Your approval is very helpful to our pri:ject, and is greatly appreciated. i Sincerely your wai C. Eng I, Curtis McGuire May 14, 1985 Page Two Finally, since the residential occupancy is seasonal, a two bedr om usage is not inappropriate.
