Dear Mr.Rippun,
We have reviewed the plans for the new home referenced above for seismic capacity.We find
the building to be adequate for the 1988 UBC prescribed(Zone 3)seismic forces.
Following is a Structural summary-
The base shear equals 3150#.
The roof will function as a continuous diaphragm as a result of the plywood sheathing
nailed over the 2x6 tongue and groove planks.The diaphragm will distribute its lateral
load uniformly to the strongest available wall portions.
There are two separate load paths available,through which lateral loading may be
resisted.The first is the racking resistance of the walls,due primarily to the friction
developed between the individual tongue and groove joints.With the dead weight of
the roof bearing on the walls,the available resistance to racking is about 30#/ft,or
approximately the same as the maximum seismic force(34#/ft).No glueing should be
required for shearing resistance.The second mechanism,is the,stub walls(detail
300/A).These provide a positive mechanism and,with their anchorage at the base and
toe-nailing along their edge,should be good for 1000#or so each.
The maximum force which would tend to separate the walls from the dovetailed
partitions is approximately 50#/joint.The cut-in joints should have adequate capacity.
The roof rafters need to be attached to the walls,and the beams strapped,per the
details shown on sheet 6.
The 1/2"dia.anchor bolts at 4'-0"o.c.should be adequate to prevent the upper
structure from sliding at the foundation wall.
In our opinion,the structure should be adequate for the seismic forces predicted for Zone 3.
