Re: Objection to Proposed Construction in Belfair of a Convenience
Store by Little Deli Marts, Inc. , Elmer Johnson & Robert Lenhart
adjacent to Union River Tributary
Dear Mr. Orr, Mr. Holdcroft and Mr. Fawver:
Please be advised that I represent a number of concerned citizens
in the Belfair. They have retained me to voice their unanimous
objection to the proposed construction of a convenience store in
the heart of Belfair, submitted by Little Deli Marts , Inc . , owned
by Elmer Johnson & Robert Lenhart .
The site is adjacent to a creek which I believe to be a tributary
of the Union River between the Mason County Substation and the
liquor store on the east side of Hwy. 3 at the "old" intersection
of Hwy. 300 .
The reason for this letter is that the proposed construction is
within 100 feet of a year round creek that, in the past I believe
has had fish spawning and living in it . The water table is also
very high at that location. Fuel is often spilled or leaks at gas
stations . The spillage will quickly seep into the ground water
which would further jeopardize the already endangered fisheries in
Hood Canal .
It would be in the best interests of the community and the
environment if the convenience store was not built in that
location. At a minimum, a complete Environmental Impact Statement
should completed before any construction is approved.
As a side note, another objection to the proposed sight is the
added congestion it will bring to an already congested area in
addition to an objection to another retail liquor establishment .
There is a petition being circulated and I have included a copy of
it for your review. By last count, over 1,500 people have signed
it .
