Mr. Vic Paulino, Fire Marshal
Planning Division,
Shelton Building Department
P. 0. Box 186

Dear Vic:
Enclosed please find copies of various dispatches sent to the various people
involved in the furnishing and installation of an approved fire detection
alarm system.
The note dated 13th of March 1978 was sent to Dean Smith of Howard S. Wright
with a copy to Wesley Johnson. The reason it is not addressed in a standard
manner is that it was sent in together with some descriptive literature.
The letter dated the 15th of March clearly shows in the last paragraph on the
first page what arrangements were made in connection with the fire alarm sys-
tem.
Finally, the letter dated 24th of March and addressed to Robert G. Stinson also
shows clearly in the two lower paragraphs on the first page what arrangements
were made.
The letter dated March 28th, 1978 and addressed to Wesley Johnson shows again
that Wesley Johnson himself was in charge of the contract award for the fire
signal system.
Please call me if you have any questions.
Yours very truly,

Per Mason County Fire Marshall's ruling smoke detectors must be used (UL approved) in all
air handling units and also in the kitchen. In case of the air handlers, the smoke de-
tector must be wired so that when activated the fan unit stops. Since the entire area
is sprinkled, again per Fire Marshall's ruling, fire dampers can be eliminated, wherever
shown on our drawings.
-J)Yg, NAry
The kitchen swxok* detector must be connected to the exhaust fan only resulting in stopage
of this fan whenever the unit is activated by smoke.
Relative to the central fire alarm system in the structure, not a part of this con-
tractor's obligation, a device must be provided so that whenever any of the above men-
tioned smoke detectors are activated, a signal is given to the central fire detection
system This item must then be included in the bid for this portion which we under-
stand currently is being worked out by the owner, Mr. Wesley Johnson.
After checking out the last paragraph of this statement with Vic Paulino, Mason County
Fire Marshall, a letter should be sent to Howard S. Wright and Bob Stimson as well as
to the Fire NNrshall himself.

Dear Bob;
Enclosed please find five (5) submittals each of the eolpment we hope to
supply for the Alderbrook Inn project. _
We ask you to note that, per Mason Ceti yMPirlMarshall's suggestion, all
fire dampers in the area above the t arcial, Opece have been eliminated
and therefore our submittals on thEkgffuse !etc., show these without
fire dampers.
We have not yet provided i0oV.09Uon ono, outside wall louvers for in-
take and exhaust since this is an `im whi is provided for by Howard S.
Wright, the General Contractor, or we' have been asked to shop the
market for a suitable 1dUver, comple t with birdscreen, and as soon as we
have one available, and approved by award S. Wright, we will submit it to
you fo-e final approval.
Again per Fire Parshall's suggestion we have provided smoke detectors which
are to be installed, one for each of our six heat pump systems, with the
equipment l0gated in the return air duct per the manufacturer's recommen-
dation. Extra terminals 1're provided on these smoke detectors for con-
'"" 3 nection, by another contirdctor, to the central fire alarm system. However,
/// our smoke detectors will 'be wired in such away that, upon detection of
smoke, the fan in the unit where the detector is located, will stop.
We also ask you to note that, again per the manufacturer's recommendation,
a thermal rather than a smoke detector has been provided for in the kitchen,
this change obviously because of the frequent occurrence of smoke in this
cooking area Again, per Dire Marshall's suggestion, this unit is not to
be connected to the central fire alarm system. It is of course also under-
stood that the new exhaust hood, currently under design by the Innkeeper's
firm in Los Angeles, would have an independent sham+.cal extinguisher system.

Due to a shortage in printed material we have not been able to obtain any
architectural or engineering specification sheets on the thermostats we
hope to use but, as was mentioned earlier, we hope to use the General
Electric Company's latest standard automatic switch over heating cooling
thermostat complete with signal lights for auxiliary heating and fan
switch for year round ventilation. Upon availability we shall forward
these specs to you for approval,
We hope the above is in order.

P,S In line with an agreement with the General Contractor, he would pro-
vide wooden curbs fdr the varioJU4' roof mounted fans thereby elimina-
ting the steel factory manufacted curbs called for in your specs.
Electric duct heaters H 2-slid H 3 we believe are not needed in view
of our different equipment nor H 4 since that unit has been replaced
with a' Meat pump.
The smoke and thergo4 detection equipment meets with NFPA Code 90
standards.

Gentlemen:
Enclosed please find submittals on the heating, ventilation and air conditioning
equipment which is shown on our latest mechanical drawings.
As can be seen from the submittals, the roof mounted exhau ans for the toilet
areas require only wood curbs supplied by your firm whin ous\ uipment covering
the curbs with the built in counter-flashing portion.
We have not included the louvers in the outside wall since it is not a part of
our program but we are, per your requ4t investigating the market in order to
find the best a.va.ilable buy with the in 1lcition and the purchase arrangements
for these louvers to be arrang ter in ordance with instructions from you.
Pee Mason County Fire Marsh we have let4,all fire dampers in all the ter-
minal points of our heatin and air con tioning systems but we have also pro-
vided smoke detectors in e dh of the un s shown. These detectors are capable
of turning off the fan in the unit wher*/it is installed, upon detection of
smoke. These arrangements are in complete conpliance with the Mason County Fire
and Building au 'ties and their finding is based on the observation that the
building is fu sprinkled.
Incidentally, understandjt{hat this is the arrangement which was originally
used as basis the me=hall,
cal design of this building.
Per Mason County Fire Pia the above mentioned smoke detectors must be con-
nected also to the central fire alarm system, an arrangement which we would as-
sume would be taken care of by Mr. Wesley Johnson when he completes his arrange-
ments for the central fire alarm system for the areas other than the commercial
portion which we are concerned with.

Att: Mr. Dean Smith & Mr. Don Bersch
Relative to the kitchen, and again per Fire Marshall's office, a smoke detector
in this area would shut off the exhaust fan in the hood only which, would make
the chemical fire extinguishing system in the hood more effective should it be-
come activated. The kitchen smoke detector would not be connected to the cen-
tral fire alarm system in view of the above mentioned chemical fire extinguish-
ing system.
Under separate cover we are sending you our up-dated mechanical drawings which
include all the latest changes as recommended by Mr. Bob Stimpson P.E. and the
supervisors of your firm.
We trust the above meets with your approval.

Dear Wes:
Pursuant •to your verbal request of this morning rely Pe to written t
clarifications on the type smoke and thermal, detectiam`,system which 4
we have submitted to your general contractor after havipg, first con-
sulted with Vic Paulin, Mason County Fire Marshall, we have the fol-
lowing information which we understand you wa forward to your insu-
rance broker.
We refer you first to our latest tins a it conditioning drawings,
which were delivered to your prof p941 tendent this morning.
As you know, the building .it-3i37•pr ad and therefore, according
to the Fire Marshall, no, re damoste in attic area above the tat
floor commercial spaces re needed. ,``
1
The six individually c rollable AA/ electric heat pump systems, five
for the restaurant and melting roWIareas and the sixth one for the lobby
will all be equipped with•*st- notrtted pyro-tronic smoke detectors, which
carry an NFPA Code # 90 approval! These units will be installed in such
a manner that the fan in the unit where each smoke detector is installed, 1
would be shuk off upon detection of smoke. These detectors are energized ,
with the radar 110 volt 50 cycle power system in the building and come
equipped wit. an extra set of terminals which we understand your fire
alarm contractor will make use of in connection with a light for each de-
tector on the central fire alarm board.
Also per Fire Marshall's request, we are installing, in the kitchen, a
thermal detector since a smoke detector, for obvious reasons, would be in such a way that
impractical in this area. This detector would b® wired a thermal detector
the main kitchen hood exhaust fan would
shut off when th
is energized. This detector would not be wired to the central fire alarm
board since the chemical extinguishing system built in the hood, would be-
come activated in case of fire.

Wesley Jones, Owner
Alberbrook Inn
r
The thermal detector in the kitchen would also be of the pyro-tronics
origin with the same approval arrangements.
We trust the above information is adequate. Please feel free to cell
should any questions arise.
