Home My WebLink About08/17/2023Mason County Civil Service Commission Meeting Minutes August 17, 2023 The regular meeting was called to order at 5:00 p.m. by Chairperson Sue Ickes. Attendance: Sue Ickes, Chair and Mark Nault, Commissioner Others: Tami Beyer, and Becky Rogers Business: 1. Approval of Minutes: July 20, 2023, regular meeting minutes Cmmrs. Nault/Ickes moved and seconded to approve the July 20, 2023, regular meeting minutes. Motion carried unanimously. 2. Open Forum for Citizen Input – None. 3. Chief Examiner Update 3.1. Position Tracking – 20 vacant funded positions: Community Service Officer–1, Corrections Deputy-8, Deputy Sheriff-8, and Support Specialist–3 4. Sheriff’s Office Update 4.1. Corrections – Briefly discussed the status of candidates in the background process and number of employees on modified duty and maternity leave. The staffing numbers are critical, and they are weighing their options and what that looks like moving forward as they provide a mandatory service. 4.2. Patrol – They are working with a few candidate names. It was noted that the number of vacant positions in patrol is equivalent to one shift. 4.3. Support Staff - A Support Specialist 2 is resigning at the end of the month. There will hire one SS shortly. There is a candidate in background, and one will be interviewed. They are pursuing three names on the eligibility list. Agency-Wide Vacancies - Chief Beyer stated they have talked about the shortage of staff and have been trying to get applicants in the door for the last several years. They have found they cannot compete with surrounding counties. They are seeing that the state is providing better packages, with better pay, benefits, and hybrid work which is convenient for families. They have the most mandated services for 24-hour operations in the entire county. The Civil Service Commission was requested to consider talking to the County Commissioners regarding the need to fill the vacant funded positions. The Civil Service Commission members were also invited to the Sheriff’s Office meeting on August 30, 2023.
