CUSHMAN LAKE LEVEL
WHEREAS, Lake Cushman is an important residential and recreational area within
Mason County; and
WHEREAS, Lake Cushman has been filled to a level of 738 feet for over 50 years;
and
WHEREAS, the 738 feet level is imperative for recreational use at the State Parks,
private docks, beaches and swimming areas; and
WHEREAS, the U.S. Department of National Parks has identified an 11.06 acre
section of their park which has been covered by lake water; and
WHEREAS, the U.S. Department of National Parks is preserving recovery of said
11.06 acres for non-flooded Elk habitat; and
WHEREAS, this 11.06 acres is the only area within the lake which serves as habitat
for fingerling fish protection to allow for growth of these to adult size; and
WHEREAS, lower levels may be necessary for emergency flood control measures
within the watershed; and
WHEREAS, the 738 feet lake level is imperative for stable property values to
provide essential and mandated County services; and
WHEREAS, the U.S. Department of National Parks is considering a negotiated land
exchange within park boundaries; and
WHEREAS, Mason County is concerned about the possibility of loss of management
of the 11.06 acres after a land exchange because this land will still be within the park
boundaries.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Mason County Commissioners
go on record supporting continuation of a 738 feet lake level except when emergency flood
control measures are necessary; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that measures be taken to assure that management
authority of said 11.06 acres remain within operation license for Lake Cushman Dam.
DATED this 26th day of March, 1991.
