Mason County Civil Service Commission Meeting Minutes July 20, 2023 The regular meeting was called to order at 5:00 p.m. by Chairperson Sue Ickes. Attendance: Sue Ickes, Chair and William Kendrick, Vice-Chair Others: Tami Beyer, and Becky Rogers. Business: 1. Approval of Minutes: June 15, 2023, regular meeting minutes. Cmmrs. Kendrick/Ickes moved and seconded to approve the June 15, 2023, regular meeting minutes. Motion carried unanimously. 2. Chief Examiner Update 2.1. Position Tracking - 19 vacant funded positions: Community Service Officer-1, Corrections Deputy-7, Deputy Sheriff-7, Evidence Technician-1, and Support Specialist-3 The Board questioned how the sheriff's office can operate with the reduced staffing and if the patrol is needing to work double shifts, overtime. Chief Beyer stated it is the time of year when they typically have overtime. Calls are prioritized differently to get the most coverage with the limited staff. There are staff still calling in sick and on vacation. Schedules are modified to address the minimums while they are trying to build the program. The shift schedules can help with four days on and four days off. 3. Sheriff's Office Update 3.1. Corrections - They are looking for candidates to interview. One more staff will be leaving on retirement. The reduced staffing in the jail is being addressed and they are using a workaround, until they can fill the vacant positions. The Board questioned if the jail population is full. Chief Beyer stated it is not full. The jail population is at 59 and they have quite a few beds that they could fill. The County recently signed a contract with Dept. of Corrections to be able to accept inmates with DOC detainer type warrants. It is not adding to the population yet. 3.2. Patrol - One candidate has a conditional offer. The Lieutenants are actively working on candidate backgrounds. This is the boating season, and they are busy with that program. 3.3. Support Staff - The support staff is working on reduced staff. One candidate has been hired and will begin August 1. Two more candidates are in background. There is a provisional candidate on the eligibility list. Consideration was given for the provisional candidate; however, it can take Mason County Civil Service Commission Meeting Minutes July 20,2023 Page 2 several months to train a staff and they did not find it would be beneficial to hire for only four months that the provisional position is set for. 3.4. Volunteer Program - The MCSO volunteer program will celebrate 25 years in August. An anniversary program is set for August 19 in Allyn, where they will be recognizing the program and approximately 25 current volunteers. 4. Adjourn - The meeting adjourned at 5: 15 pm.
