A resolution to petition the Governor and the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission
to end the Day Use Parking Fees
WHEREAS, the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission , with the agreement of the
legislature, instituted day- use parking fees in all Washington State Parks ; and
WHEREAS, those fees have not produced the promised revenue ; and
WHEREAS, the costs of raising the fees and revenue have been higher than anticipated and
attendance at Washington State Parks has dropped significantly and has not recovered as
expected ; and
WHEREAS, most Washington State Parks are in rural areas and accessible mainly by personal
vehicles and rural economic development depends heavily on parks and recreation for the
tourism component of rural economic diversifications and
WHEREAS, counties and cities of the State of Washington have been negatively impacted by
these fees and we believe the people should have free access to the recreation and parks
properties they own .
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Mason County Commissioners do hereby
petition Governor Christine Gregoire, the Washington State Legislature and the Washington State
Parks and Recreation Commission to end the failed experiment in parking fees at all Washington
State Parks and fund parks and parks' maintenance through regular legislative budget and
appropriations process .
