May 28, 2013
Attendance: Randy Neatherlin, County Commissioner; Terri Jeffreys. County Commissioner; Scott Hilburn,
Hospital District #1; Peggy VanBuskirk, Hospital District #2; Frank Phillips, Fire Commissioner.
Mike Olsen, City of Shelton Commissioner, joined the meeting at 3:41 p.m.
Tim Sheldon, County Commissioner, was absent.
1. The Chairperson called the meeting to order at 3:34 p.m.
2. Cmmr. Jeffreys suggested adding an item under item five to discuss the Health Officer contract.
VanBuskirk/Hilburn moved and seconded to adopt the agenda as amended. Motion carried
unanimously.
3. Correspondence - None
4. VanBuskirk/Phillips moved and seconded to adopt the regular meeting minutes of April 23, 2013 as
presented. Motion carried unanimously.
5. Office of the Director
5.1 Health Officer Report - The Health Officer was absent.
5.2 Cmmr. Jefffreys noted that Dr. Yu was retiring in November. She has offered to remain on
contract with Mason County for one day per week but she will not be renewing her contract with
Thurston County. Thurston County would like Mason County to join in their recruitment of a new
Health Officer. The Board needs to decide whether to continue the contract with Dr. Yu or to go
with Thurston County's new Health Officer.
After discussion the Board decided that they would prefer to retain Dr. Yu. A contract will be
negotiated and brought forward for a vote on a future agenda.
The Board also agreed to decline a joint meeting with Thurston County.
6. Health & Human Services April Monthly Activity Report - There were no questions on the report.
7. Overview of the Community Health Improvement Plan priorities and Collective Impact - Kim Klint, Mason
Matters, provided an overview of the plan and discussed the Board of Health's potential role in the work.
The Board discussed ways to encourage economic growth in order to assist with the priorities in the CHIP.
The CHIP will be presented at the June meeting. Mr. Hilburn asked that staff present a CHIP priority that
the Board could focus on that would have realistic outcomes.
8. Public Comment -
8.1 Marilyn Vogler suggested including a member from the school districts on the Board of Health.
8.2 Tamara Ingwaldson provided information about a virtual volunteer program.
9. Waivers - Ms. Kirkpatrick suggested including the waivers on the monthly activity report instead of
including them on the agenda.
10. Adjourn - The meeting adjourned at 4:49 p.m.
