AN ORDINANCE AMENDING TITLE 17, CHAPTER 17.06 OF THE
MASON COUNTY CODE REVISING DEFINITION OF "STRUCTURES"
TO EXEMPT FENCES AND SIGNS LESS THAN SEVEN (7) FEET IN HEIGHT
AN ORDINANCE amending Title 17, Chapter 17.06 of the Mason County Code under the authority of
Chapter 36.70 and 36.70A RCW.
WHEREAS, amendments to Title 17, Chapter 17.06 as adopted revise the definition of "structure" to
exempt fences and signs less than seven (7) feet in height; and
WHEREAS, the current height exemption is six (6) feet which conflicts with the newly adopted 2012
International Residential Code that reads fences not over seven (7) in height are exempt from
building permits; and
WHEREAS, to maintain consistency between building codes and development codes, the definition
of structures, including fences, subject to development permits is also revised to exempt fences and
signs Tess than seven (7) in height;
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY ORDAINED, that the Board of Commissioners of Mason County
hereby amends the Mason County Code Title 17 (Zoning), Chapter 17.06, Section 17.06.010
(Definitions) as to the definition of "Structures". (See Attachment A)

Chapter 17.06 DEFINITIONS
17.06.010 Definitions.
"Structure" means anything constructed in the ground, or anything erected which requires
location on the ground, or is attached to something having location on or in the ground, but not
including fences or signs &i -seven feet or Tess in height, driveways, or other paved areas.
