RE: Monkeypox
Take the following steps to prevent getting Monkeypox:
On August 1, 2022 the Department of Health notified Mason County Public Health and
Human Services that a person in Mason County has tested positive for Monkeypox. Mason
County Public Health is currently conducting a case and contact investigation so that
vaccinations, therapy, and isolation can be initiated.
The illness typically lasts two to four weeks and most people get better on their own without
treatment. However, sometimes Monkeypox can cause scars from the sores, lead to
pneumonia, and in rare cases, even be fatal. People who have Monkeypox can spread the
virus from the time symptoms start until the rash has fully healed and a fresh layer of skin
has formed.
Take the following steps to prevent getting Monkeypox:
• Avoid close, skin-to-skin contact with people who has a rash that looks like
Monkeypox.
Do not touch the rash or scabs.
Do not kiss, hug, cuddle, or have sex.
• Avoid contact with objects and materials that a person with Monkeypox has used.
Do not share eating utensils or cups.
Do not handle or touch the bedding, towels, or clothing of an individual
with Monkeypox.
Pets of individuals with Monkeypox should be isolated from the individual.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer,
especially before eating or touching your face and after you use the bathroom.
